The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), which pursues the financing, promoting and expanding of intra-African and extra-African trade, and the French Development Agency (AFD) have engaged in a strategic partnership to increase climate finance efforts in Africa. In support of this cooperation, a Technical Assistance (TA) Programme calls for Afreximbank to adopt a climate finance strategy, a policy framework and subsequent guidelines.
The Frankfurt School-UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance (FS-UNEP Centre) will implement a three-phase TA Programme as follows:
(1) The development of a Climate Finance Proposal for decision makers at Afreximbank that informs the strategy of financing low carbon, sustainable development across Africa, including an institutional diagnostic (to improve its E&S management system (ESMS), stakeholder analysis and a market assessment to identify investment opportunities;
(2) The creation of a Strategic Plan that includes the preparation of the climate finance strategy, policy framework and guidelines, as well as the structuring of a climate finance portfolio and preparation of a capacity building package; and,
(3) The support to implement and promote the Climate Finance Strategy during the piloting phase, which includes the development of new products, the delivery of comprehensive capacity-building trainings and recommendations on standards, policies and procedures for climate finance activities.
