Optimization and control are fundamental to many problems in biomedicine. For instance, in medical interventions, the objective is often to eliminate pathogens efficiently while minimizing adverse side effects. Precision medicine takes this a step further, aiming to tailor treatments to the unique characteristics of individual patients.

A central aim of the workshop is integrating mechanistic modeling and data-driven insights with optimization and control methods for biomedical applications. In particular, modern automatic differentiation tools—which form the backbone of many AI methods—are also highly valuable for calibrating and controlling complex dynamical systems in biomedicine and beyond.

The first day of the workshop will highlight recent advances in modeling, optimization, and control methods applied across a range of biomedical systems. The second day will be dedicated to exploring the complex interactions between the microbiome and antibiotics. As antibiotic resistance continues to rise, there is a growing need for more targeted and judicious use of these drugs. However, the intricate dynamics of multi-species bacterial ecosystems—and the challenges associated with managing them through antibiotic interventions—make treatment optimization in these contexts particularly demanding.

Travel Directions

Using Public Transport

From Frankfurt Airport:

  • Take the S-Bahn train (direction: “Frankfurt Innenstadt”) to Konstablerwache station
  • Then take the U5 metro (direction: “Preungesheim”) to Deutsche Nationalbibliothek
  • Cross Adickesallee directly at the traffic lights at the German National Library
  • The Frankfurt School Campus is diagonally opposite the German National Library on the other side of Adickesallee Street

From Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (Central Station):

  • Take the U5 metro (direction: “Preungesheim”) to Deutsche Nationalbibliothek station
  • Cross Adickesallee directly at the traffic lights at the German National Library
  • The Frankfurt School Campus is diagonally opposite the German National Library on the other side of Adickesallee Street

From the “Zeil” shopping street in Frankfurt city centre:

  • From Konstablerwache station, take the U5 metro (direction: “Preungesheim”) to Deutsche Nationalbibliothek
  • Cross Adickesallee directly at the traffic lights at the German National Library
  • The Frankfurt School Campus is diagonally opposite the German National Library on the other side of Adickesallee Street

From Frankfurt city centre:

  • From Hauptwache or Willy-Brandt Platz station, take the U1, U2, U3 or U8 metro heading north (direction: Oberursel, Bad Homburg, Riedberg, etc.) to Polizeipräsidium / Miquel-/Adickesallee station
  • Walk east along Adickesallee for about five minutes; the campus is on the left

RMV ticket machines

Local public transport tickets are available from ticket machines, situated at the local railway stations. Remember that you will need to purchase a ticket before boarding the train. By touching the screen, you can set the operating instructions to various languages (English, French, Italian, Spanish and Turkish). Then follow the instructions on the user screen and select the type of ticket required (single adult ticket, day ticket, short hop ticket). The ticket machines accept payment in coins and banknotes and usually also allow for cashless payment.

Travelling by Car

From the South (Airport) or North:

  • Take the A5 to the Nordwestkreuz junction, then take the A66 heading towards Frankfurt
  • Drive to the end of the motorway, then continue to follow the road (now called Miquelallee)
  • Miquelallee joins Adickesallee; the Frankfurt School campus is on the left
  • To turn left, one needs to drive straight forward at the big crossing (traffic light)
  • Just behind the crossing, it is possible to turn and drive back
  • Then, the Frankfurt School campus is on the right

From the West:

  • Take the A66 heading towards Frankfurt/Miquelallee until you reach the end of the motorway, then continue to follow the road (now called Miquelallee)
  • Miquelallee joins Adickesallee; the Frankfurt School campus is on the left
  • To turn left, one needs to drive straight across the big junction (traffic light)
  • Just behind the crossing, it is possible to turn and drive back
  • Then, Frankfurt School campus is on the right

From the East:

  • Take the A661 until you reach Exit 7 signposted “Frankfurt-Eckenheim’, then head in the direction of Frankfurt-Innenstadt
  • After about 4 km (2.5 miles) turn right into Adickesallee
